New Tools for Weighing Pros and Cons of Bioenergy

May 20, 2011

‘Bioenergy and Food Security (BEFS) Analytical Framework' is the Food and Agriculture Organization's new methodology to help policy makers make informed decisions in the development of bioenergy strategies in their countries. With the current debate on utilization of agricultural lands for food production versus biofuel production, the framework presents multiple issues and sectors, and potential risks and benefits in light of country and regional needs.

"Our goal is to help policy makers take informed decisions regarding whether bioenergy development is a viable option and, if so, identify policies that will maximize benefits and minimize risks," explains Heiner Thofern, who heads FAO's Bioenergy and Food Security (BEFS) project.

The framework has been finalized after the three year development and field test phase in Peru, Tanzania and Thailand.
