Ministers Meet to Discuss Agriculture in Latin America
August 10, 2007 |
The Fourth Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Rural Life was held last week in Antigua, Guatemala. Delegates of 34 countries members of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), leading experts in the field, and senior officials of international organizations met to analyze and discuss the new challenges agriculture faces in the hemisphere. The aim of the meeting was to discuss issues related to the sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas, such as poverty reduction, climate change, agro-energy and biotechnology.
Oscar Berger, president of Guatemala, said during his opening remarks that these “variables are being included for only one purpose: to achieve comprehensive development through strategic actions aimed at reducing rural and urban poverty in Latin America”.
One of the main outcomes of the meeting will be the adoption of the 2008-2009 Hemispheric Ministerial Agenda, which will give continuity to the implementation of the AGRO 2003-2015 Plan. The AGRO Plan, approved by the Second Ministerial (Panama 2003), sets out a shared vision and agenda for the hemisphere’s agricultural sector, closely linked to the attainment of the Millennium Goals, especially with regard to the reduction of hunger and poverty.
