Biotechnology, Biosafety Policy Development in Thailand

August 10, 2007

The government of Thailand has outlined the National Biotechnology Policy Framework for 2004-2009 to promote research, development and the application of biotechnology, taking into account the safety to the environment as well as human and animal health. Although many research and development projects on genetically modified (GM) plants have been established in the country, the Thai government still does not allow the commercial release of GM plants until it has been proven that they are safe.  Several GM crops have undergone biosafety testing and assessment in accordance with the National Biosafety Guidelines. The establishment of the Biosafety Legislation of Thailand is presently in progress in order to ensure the safety of GMOs.  Thailand has already become a party of Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
