Bangladesh MOE DG Calls for Biosafety Measures for GM Crops

August 10, 2007

Director General Khandaker Rashedul Haque, of Bangladesh's Department of Environment, Ministry of Environment and Forests stressed the need to develop a Biosafety Clearing House (Web-based Information System) for the commercialization of genetically modified (GM) crops during  the “Training Workshop on Biosafety Clearing House” recently held in Dhaka.

The workshop, aimed at public participation and informed decision making on biosafety, was attended by about 40 biotech and biosafety personnel of different organizations. The status of field trials for three  GM crops in Bangladesh was also discussed.

Bangladesh, as a Party to the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety,  has to develop a web-based biosafety information source and to connect it with the central portal of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD).
