Brazil, Status of Biotech Maize Approved in May Still Suspended

August 10, 2007

Liberty Link maize, engineered with tolerance to ammonium gluphosinate herbicide, was approved (17 votes against 4) for commercialization on May 16 2007 by the Brazilian National Technical Commission for Biosafety (CNTBio), nine years after the submission for approval by the multinational corporation Bayer, the technology developers. However, the approval was revoked by the Federal Justice of the State of Paraná claiming that studies needed to be undertaken to guarantee coexistence of biotech varieties with their conventional and organic counterparts, and that a monitoring program had to be in place. The CNTBio met last July, but members of the commission could not agree on the legal requirements for biotech crops. The matter has therefore been postponed to mid August, when the approval of another biotech maize variety, developed by Monsanto, will also be deliberated. CNTBio is composed by representatives of several Ministries, including Agriculture, Health, and Environment, and by national experts in relevant fields.
