GM Crop Adoption in Portugal Increases by 60% in 2011

October 21, 2011

Based on the official data provided by the Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development in Portugal, Bt maize is now grown in 7,843 hectares this year, compared to 4,868 hectares in 2010, an increase of 60%. This increased adoption reflects the Portuguese farmer's confidence in the technology and the importance of using these crops for sustainable agricultural production and the country's international competitiveness. Farmers have already benefited from the GM corn which was officially approved for cultivation in the EU in May 1998.
