Public Awareness and Knowledge on Modern Biotech in Malaysia

October 21, 2011

Biotechnology is one of the important industries that help Malaysia reach its goal of becoming an industrialized country by 2010. Thus, Latifah Amin and other researchers conducted a study to identify the awareness and knowledge level of the public in the Klang Valley region and to compare these levels across the different stakeholder groups.

With a total of 434 respondents under eleven identified stakeholder groups, the survey showed that the overall mean score for awareness and knowledge on modern biotechnology were moderate. Significant differences in awareness on modern biotechnology were found in different stakeholder groups and educational level. The level of knowledge differed across stakeholder groups, religion, races, age groups, and gender. The findings can be used to understand the level awareness on modern biotechnology in a developing country.
