Sweden Govt Grants $12 M to BEcA Hub to Address Food Security

October 21, 2011

The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs has given a grant of USD12 M to the Biosciences eastern and central Africa Hub (BecA Hub) to address food security issues in Africa. The three-year grant will commence in November 2011. Funds will be for institutional core support, Africa Biosciences Challenge Fund for fellowships and trainings, and research projects on crops, livestock and bioinformatics.

"I am confident that this will further strengthen the BecA Hub team and will bring us closer to African institutions and regional programs addressing food security issues in Africa," said Dr. Segenet Kelemu, BecA Hub Director based at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya. We trust this will be the start of a long-standing science and development partnership with Sweden committed to Africa's development."
