High-yielding Crops from India Blossom in Philippine Soil

April 30, 2010

Dryland crops developed by the International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in India, grew well on Philippine soils. This was the hopeful outcome of the project entitled Field Testing of ICRISAT Legume Varieties and Technologies in Selected Regions of the Philippines during its first year of planting trial in seven pilot regions. The high-yielding seeds were distributed to farmers in order to test their compatibility in Philippine soil.

The project aims to provide appropriate technologies that will improve the production and income of Filipino farmers in rural areas. Dr. William D. Dar, ICRISAT's director general, expressed his expectation towards the program: "We hope that through this project, we will be able to identify breeding lines for peanut, chickpea, and pigeonpea that we could recommend for the national screening test and showcase the technology to our farmers to increase their production and income."
