New Boost for Maize-Legume Cropping in Eastern and Southern Africa

April 30, 2010

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), together with Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), and the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA), formed a research program entitled Sustainable intensification of maize-legume cropping systems for food security in eastern and southern Africa (SIMLESA).

Mulugetta Mekuria, the SIMLESA's program leader from CIMMYT, affirmed that the demand for maize in the region will increase by 40%, while the demand for legumes may increase up to 50%. Thus, SIMLESA aims to improve the food security and income of households in eastern and southern Africa by implementing sustainable maize-legume farming systems.

The collaboration also includes the national agricultural research systems of Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. SIMLESA is funded by the Australian Government, and is part of Australia's four-year program on Food Security through Rural Development Initiative.
