Latin America and Caribbean Leaders Discuss Transformation of Agriculture

April 30, 2010

"Hunger has risen worldwide over the past three years because of insufficient investment in the rural sector, the economic and financial crisis and, in particular, soaring food prices. Unfortunately, Latin America and the Caribbean have not been an exception,"said Food and Agriculture (FAO) Director-General Jacques Diouf during the 31st FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, in Panama City last April 26-30, 2010. Diouf noted however, that this scenario has necessitated the repositioning of agriculture and food security in national and regional development policies and programs.

FAO member countries are discussing a program of policies to support small-scale farming aimed at transforming this sector into "a vital component of the solution to rural poverty and reduce dependency on food imports." A FAO document proposes that governments boost domestic food markets, increase farming productivity, and implement risk management mechanisms.
