USDA Grants Protection to 39 New Plant Varieties

August 29, 2012

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released certificates of protection good for 20-25 years to the developers of 39 new varieties of seed-produced and tuber-propagated plants including corn, cotton, potato, and soybean. The certificates were issued after assessments proved that the varieties are distinct from other varieties, genetically uniform, and stable through successive generations. The legal protection gives developers the exclusive rights to multiply and market the seeds of their varieties.
