Scientists Investigate Western Corn Rootworm Adaptation to Bt Maize

August 29, 2012

Iowa State University scientist Jennifer Petzold-Maxwell and colleagues examined the inheritance of resistance, feeding behavior, and fitness costs for western corn rootworm with resistance to Bt maize expressing Cry13Bb1. The team found that the resistant strain of the rootworm developed more rapidly and showed improved survival on Bt maize when compared with the susceptible strain.

They also conducted reciprocal crosses of the resistant and susceptible strains which showed that the inheritance of resistance was nonrecessive. No fitness costs were found to be linked with resistance alleles in the presence of two parasitic nematodes. Results of the larval feeding studies indicated that the susceptible and resistant strains have no differences in their preference for Bt and non-Bt root tissue.
