Iranian Umbilical Cord Bank Manufactures Products for Cord Cell Therapy

August 29, 2012

The Umbilical Cord Bank at Royan Institute is manufacturing Plaquete Lysis products to be used in cord cell therapy. According to Dr. Marzieh Ebrahimi, head of Royan's Umbilical Cord Bank, these products are a rich source of growth factors which are needed for cell multiplication, and are good candidates in various cell therapy and skin treatments especially plastic surgery.

In the past, a 10-20 percent concentration of fetal calf serum (FCS) or fetal bovine serum (FBS) was used to cultivate these cells. The method usually results in an inflammatory response and a rejection of the transplanted cells. In addition, cultivations with animal serum lead to a spread of bacterial and viral infections specially prions -- proteins commonly found in mad cow disease. Plaquete Lysis will be manufactured from extracted cord blood, reducing the chances of sensitivity in the immune system.
