FAO Proposes New Framework in Agriculture

August 29, 2012

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is proposing an action framework for agriculture and food security that particularly focuses on coping with water scarcity. As FAO Director General Jose Graziano Da Silva stated during the World Water Week's opening ceremony, 'there is no food security without water security".

The FAO's framework, available at the organization's website, cites the following issues which the policy makers and government officials should pay attention to:

  • modernization of irrigation;
  • better storage of rainwater at farm level;
  • water recycling and re-using;
  • pollution control; and
  • substitution and reduction of food waste.
