Draft Guidelines for Safety Assessment of GMF in India

January 25, 2008

The Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a medical research council of the Ministry of Health, Government of India has formulated draft guidelines for the safety assessment of foods derived from genetically engineered plants to facilitate evaluation of genetically modified (GM) food safety submissions by the regulatory authorities. Bt cotton is the only crop that has been commercialized since 2002 and many food crops at public and private sector institutions including Bt brinjal are at the advance stage of development.

In view of  the R&D progress of GM food, it was deemed necessary to have guidelines to evaluate new foods and food products to address safety concerns. The guidelines were formulated considerating the existing regulations and guidelines as well as the initiatives taken by various departments and organizations. Draft guidelines have also been submitted to the Review Committee on Genetic Manipulation (RCGM) and Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC).
