Vietnam's Draft Regulation for Field Trials of GM Crops
January 25, 2008 |
Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has released a draft regulation for the field trials of genetically modified crops (GMC). Under the proposed regulation, clearance for field trials will be given by a special Advisory Council on GMC Biosafety Management (ACGBM) with the approval of the Agriculture Minister. Risk supervision will be handled by the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Forestry under the supervision of MARD. Local governments or provincial committees were given the responsibility of planning the site for GM trial, educating the public about transgenic crops and inspecting the trial sites. These regulations are expected to be approved by mid 2008 and to take effect by the end of the year.
