FAO Launches Agri-Projects in Africa
January 25, 2008 |
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) launched a series of projects to improve agricultural productivity and create new marketing opportunities in the five African countries of Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Senegal and Sierra Leone. The projects which are part of the FAO Trust Fund for Food Security are being financed through a US$10 million grant from the Italian Government. The countries are geographically near each other and all face alarming levels of poverty and malnutrition.
“These projects target food insecurity, taking into account the complex nature of its causes and offering a variety of options for overcoming it," said FAO Assistant Director-General José María Sumpsi, of the Agency’s Technical Cooperation Department. “Priorities have been identified together with national governments.” The project’s focus on agriculture will be complemented by initiatives to improve the commercialization of products.
