Bt Cotton Trials Approved in Uganda

January 25, 2008

Uganda’s National Biosafety Committee (NBC) has approved the confined trials of Bt cotton in the country. BT cotton is the second genetically modified (GM) crop, after the black Sigatoka-resistant banana, to be given approval by the NBC. The trials will be carried out by the National Semi-Arid Resources Research Institute (NaSARRI) in Moboku and Sarete in Kasese district. Dr. Eemetai Areke, NaSARRI director and lead investigator of the project, said that the trials will provide vital information that can be used in the development of Bt cotton suited for Uganda. The GM crop is resistant to the bollworm, a major constraint of cotton production in the region.
