Australian Study Says GM Benefits Outweigh Risks

January 25, 2008

Genetically modified (GM) plants and food outweigh the risks and there is no compeling evidence of their harm to humans. Dr. Lucy Carter of the University of Queensland, Australia makes this conclusion based on a three-and-half year study and adds that Australian states should not ban the commercial planting of GM plants.

Carter's research showed that there are significant benefits to investment in GM plants. "To proceed with care is the most prudent decision regulatory authorities can make at this stage, "she advised. There was no evidence, she said, that could justify continuing moratoriums on commercial GM planting as long as thorough risk assessments were done.
