New Breed of Chicken to Help Raise Ugandans from Poverty

July 22, 2011

Arizona State University researcher named Jagdev Sharma aimed to produce highly productive chicken breeds to help raise Ugandans from poverty. Thus, he developed a new breed of chicken that has been genetically selected to provide both meat and eggs and thrive in resource-poor village environments, requiring no additional feed.

The hybrid chicken is called Kuroiler and was first introduced in India. Kuroiler is now being tested in Uganda, and the initial findings indicate that the hybrid is outperforming native chickens.  Sharma also recorded a 133 percent increase in meat production, and 462 percent increase in egg production. These production advantage can be projected to 341 percent increase in income of rural poultry farmers, which are predominantly village housewives. Thus, the new breed could be an "important stepping stone toward nutritional and economic security" in Africa.
