Kenya Approves the Importation of GM Maize

July 22, 2011

Drought has already made its toll in Kenya and the government responded by allowing the importation of genetically modified (GM) maize. Large South African suppliers were already instructed to import GM maize to cover the maize deficit which had caused the closure of six processing plants. Around 28 other plants have suspended operations.

The National Biosafety Authority of Kenya (NBA) headed by Mugiira Roy said that importation will be conducted following the NBA regulations. Grain Millers Association president Diamond Lalli opined that with the GM maize being 30 percent cheaper than conventional maize, they hope to reduce the cost of maize final products and by-products.
