Rothamsted Research Launches New Science Strategy

January 6, 2012

Rothamsted Research in the United Kingdom launched a new science strategy, Where Knowledge Grows. The strategy incorporates food security and environmental research to increase crop productivity and quality as well as to develop environmentally sustainable solutions for food and energy production.

The report says that no single approach can deliver sustainable agriculture rather a broad perspective is needed that includes biotechnology, agronomy and agro-ecology. The strategy identifies the following four programs:
  • Increasing wheat productivity to yield 20 tons per hectare in 20 years
  • Optimizing carbon capture by grasslands and perennial energy crops
  • Designing seeds with improved health and nutritional traits
  • Designing, modeling, and assessing sustainable systems
