FBAE Requests for the Removal of Bt Brinjal Moratorium
July 30, 2010 |
Dr. Chavali Kameswara Rao, Foundation for Biotechnology Awareness and Education (FBAE) Consultant-Biotechnology & Medicinal Plants, announced that FBAE will release a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India, Minister of Agriculture and the other departments concerned, requesting for the removal of the moratorium imposed by the environment ministry on the commercial release of the Bt Brinjal crop.
The environment ministry had recently imposed the moratorium on the commercialization of Bt brinjal due to some issues raised by several non-government organizations (NGOs).
"The government's decision of putting a moratorium would seriously affect research and development activities in the country's biotechnology sector," Rao said.
FBAE also requested the government to consider the recommendation released by the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), which states that Bt brinjal should be commercially released without further delay.
