OGTR Notification to Allow Limited Release of IR and HT Cotton
July 23, 2010 |
The Australian Gene Technology Regulatory Office decided to issue a license to Monsanto Australia Limited for the limited and controlled release of genetically modified (GM) cotton with insect resistance alone or in combination with herbicide tolerance. The GM cotton will be grown at up to 50 sites per year from October 2010 to October 2014 in cotton growing areas of Queensland and New South Wales in summer and in the north west of Western Australia in winter.
The issuance of the license was made after extensive consultation on the Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plant (RARMP) with the public and related government agencies. Issues on health and people safety as well as the protection of the environment raised during the consultation process were considered in finalizing the RARMP and in making the decision.
