WARDA No More, Rice Center Gets New Name
September 11, 2009 |
The West Africa Rice Development Association (WARDA), a Benin-based research organization that aims to contribute to poverty alleviation and food security in Africa through research and development of the rice sector, announced that it will formally change its name to "Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice)." The center was created in 1971 by 11 countries, mostly from West Africa, with assistance from the United Nations and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). The center is one of the 15 international agricultural research institutes supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
"This change reflects current reality. Today our Center is very different from when it was established in 1971 in view of the increase in the number of its member countries from beyond West Africa and the continent-wide adoption of the public goods generated by it," says the Center's Council of Ministers. Since 2007, several countries from Central, Eastern and Northern Africa including Egypt, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, have joined the Center. AfricaRice has now 23 member countries.
