Kenya Agri Minister Calls for Clear Direction for Biotech
September 26, 2008 |
Kenya Minister for Agriculture William Ruto voiced his concern to “see all African countries adopt an enabling policy and regulatory framework for the development and application of biotechnology. This will also enhance private sector growth, cross-border trade and fast-track the integration of Africa in the global bio-economy.” These remarks were forwarded during the All Africa Congress on Biotechnology held in Nairobi, Kenya.
The congress which sought to bring together various key stakeholders to discuss biotechnology as an important tool in agriculture was sponsored by the African Biotechnology Stakeholders Forum, the African Union and other partners. Ruto called on the participants to ensure that “the outcome of this congress provides a clear direction for Africa in the development and application of this increasingly beneficial technology.”
