HortResearch and Crop & Food Research to Merge

New Zealand’s Crop & Food Research and HortResearch have been granted shareholder approval to merge, according to Minister of Research, Science and Technology Pete Hodgson. The companies will merge on 1 December 2008 into a new Crown Research Institute. Hodgson said that the "bold and exciting" merger would combine the companies’ knowledge and expertise in significant areas of sustainable production, elite genetics and smart breeding, and food and health. HortResearch and Crop & Food Research were among 10 crown research institutes set up by the New Zealand Government in 1992.
Crop & Food Research chairman Rodney Wong says a merger could offer potential for new opportunities and greater benefits. “This includes a more robust critical mass around research for New Zealand’s horticulture and food industries.”
