EFSA GMO Panel Concludes GM Maize DP51291 As Safe As Conventional Counterpart

November 13, 2024

The Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms of the European Food Safety Authority (GMO Panel) has released its Scientific Opinion on the safety of genetically modified (GM) herbicide tolerant and insect resistant maize DP51291, for import, processing, and food and feed uses within the European Union (EU) and does not include cultivation.

Following the submission of application GMFF-2021-0071 under Regulation (EC) No. 1829/2003 from Corteva Agriscience, the GMO Panel was asked to deliver a Scientific Opinion on the safety of GM maize DP51291. In their Scientific Opinion, the GMO Panel did not identify safety concerns regarding the toxicity and allergenicity of the IPD072Aa, PAT and PMI proteins as expressed in maize DP51291 and did not find any evidence that the genetic modification would change the overall allergenicity of maize DP51291.

The GMO Panel concludes that GM maize DP51291 is as safe as its conventional counterpart and the tested non-GM maize reference varieties with respect to potential effects on human and animal health and the environment.
