EFSA Releases Assessments of Two GM Maize for Food and Feed Uses

January 24, 2024

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO Panel) has published the Scientific Opinion which reports on the outcome of its risk assessment of two genetically modified (GM) maize, DP23211 from Corteva Agriscience Belgium, and DP915635 from Pioneer Hi-Bred International.

Application EFSA-GMO-NL-2019-163 under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 for maize DP23211 is for import, processing, and food and feed uses within the European Union (EU) and does not include cultivation. The GMO Panel does not identify safety concerns regarding the toxicity and allergenicity of the IPD072Aa, PAT, and PMI proteins and the DvSSJ1 dsRNA and derived siRNAs newly expressed in maize DP23211.

Application FSA-GMO-NL-2020-172 under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 is also for import, processing, and food and feed uses within the EU of maize DP915635 and does not include cultivation. The GMO Panel does not identify safety concerns regarding the toxicity and allergenicity of the IPD079Ea, PAT, and PMI proteins as expressed in maize DP915635.

According to the Scientific Opinion, the consumption of food and feed from maize DP23211 and DP915635 does not represent a nutritional concern in humans and animals. The GMO Panel concludes that maize DP23211 and DP915635 are as safe as their conventional counterparts and the tested non-GM maize reference varieties for potential effects on human and animal health and the environment.
