Ethiopia Approves GM Potato Field Trials
October 26, 2022 |
Ethiopia has approved the observation field trials for genetically modified (GM) blight resistant potatoes. The approval by the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority gives the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) permission to plant the potatoes in a confined trial farming area.
The GM potatoes project in Africa is supported by the United States Agency for International Development and the International Potato Center (CIP), a research center within the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. Ethiopia, Uganda, and Rwanda have already joined CIP as members.
