Study Shows Gene Editing More Favored than GMOs in Traditional and Social Media

June 29, 2023

Products of genetic engineering have faced controversial issues for many years. A study by Alliance for Science and Cision Global Insights shows that the public views gene editing more favorably than GMOs by the public. The findings are published in GM Crops & Food.

Five years (January 2018 and December 2022) social and traditional media content were analyzed. It was found that gene editing consistently received higher favorability ratings than GMOs on social and traditional media. Furthermore, there were several months when the favorability rating for gene editing reached close to 100%, particularly on social media.

The results of the study encourage optimism to the scientific community that gene edited products will be accepted and adopted by the public and realize their promise to help alleviate food insecurity and contribute to environmental sustainability.
