Workshop on Advances In Tropical Genomics in Indonesia

A two day seminar/workshop on "Advances in Tropical Genomics: Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Tropical Biodiversity" was held on 20-21 December 2011 at the IPB International Convention Center, Bogor and SEAMEO-BIOTROP campus. Some 90 participants from various universities, research centers, representatives of various government ministries, Indonesian Academy of Sciences, industries and molecular biology companies attended the event.
Featured in the event was the keynote speech delivered by Prof. Dr. Wickneswari Ratnam from University Kebangsaan Malaysia who discussed about "Exploring Genomics Approaches in Conservation and Improvement of Tropical Forest Species: The Challenging Roles of a National Genome Centre". Plenary speakers included Dr. Kazuyuki Doi (Nagoya University), and Dr. Junya Yamagishi (Obihiro University), Dr. Suharsono (IPB), Indonesia; and Dr. Bahagiawati A.H., Center for Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources Research and Development (BB BIOGEN), Ministry of Agriculture, Indonesia.
The one-day seminar focused on the various aspects of recent genomics research conducted in the region and developed countries while the workshop exposed participants to recent methodologies and protocols on how genomics and bioinformatics could aid in tackling their research problems, set new perspectives and directions in their research.
