Bangladesh President Calls for Biotech Research Institute
March 18, 2011 |
The President of Bangladesh and Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Zillur Rahman expressed the need for biotechnology research and development to mitigate hunger and malnutrition. In addition, he said he will direct the Government to establish a Biotechnology Research Institute at Bangladesh Agricultural University to strengthen the teaching, research, and extension of biotechnology. He stressed this thought during a convocation at BAU on March 8, 2011 celebrating 50 years of existence.
"Now is the time for a Biotechnology Revolution so that we can grow more food from shrinking land and adverse climatic conditions," the President said.
Also at the same forum was Dr. Prabhu Pingali, Director, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He enumerated three things that Bangladesh needs: stress tolerant crops like Swarna sub1 rice for submergence tolerance, Golden Rice for alleviation of vitamin A deficiency and blindness, and efforts to disseminate innovations to stakeholders.
