Australian OGTR Announces Application for Commercial Release of GM Canola

March 18, 2011

Bayer CropScience Pty Ltd. applied for a license to commercialize genetically modified (GM) canola into the environment to the Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator. GM canola InVigor® x Roundup Ready® contains genes for tolerance to the two herbicides (glyphosate and glufosinate-ammonium) and was developed by conventional breeding by crossing GM InVigor® canola and GM Roundup Ready® canola.

The two individual GM parental lines have been approved for commercial release since 2003. The GM lines once approved will be used for human food and animal feed. Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ)  approved the use of food derived from GM InVigor® canola and GM Roundup Ready® canola for human consumption.
