Finnish MTK on GM Labelling

August 17, 2007

Labelling of genetically-modified (GM) foods is still one of the unresolved issues, especially in Europe. Such is the case in Finland where the Finland's Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK) has already called for a voluntary GM feed labelling. They said in a press statement that consumers had a right to know about whether meat had been fed with GM feed. Michael Hornborg, the chairman of MTK, on the other hand said that the organization could not comment on genetic modification itself as GM products were already widely used and that meat from animals fed GM soy had been sold in Finland.

Finland has been a GM soybean importer and over the course of the week, two additional Finish food groups said they would begin to import GM soy feed.   View article at: http://virtual.finland.fi/stt/showarticle.asp?intNWSAID=16469&group=General
