Bayer’s Novel Herbicidal Active Ingredient Granted Approval

August 17, 2007

United States’ Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted regulatory approval to Bayer CropScience’s new cereal herbicidal active ingredient pyrasulfotole. Pyrasulfotole, which will be launched under the brand name Huskie®, can be used as part of a resistance management program to control sulfonylurea-resistant weeds. The product is expected to offer farmers protection against a broad spectrum of broad-leaved weeds. Further registrations are expected in Canada and Australia later this year. Tembotrione, another herbicidal active ingredient, has recently been approved for use in Europe.

Dr. Rüdiger Scheitza, member of the board of management of Bayer CropScience, revealed that their portfolio of new herbicidal active ingredients, launched in 2000, has already generated over EUR 250 million in sales in the first six months of 2007 - an increase of 15% over the previous year. Bayer CropScience’s active ingredient launch program, comprised of 26 active ingredients to be launched by 2011, has a combined peak sales potential of approximately EUR 2 billion.
