Opportunities to Transform Agriculture in Africa
November 19, 2010 |
Africa faces three major opportunities that can transform its agriculture into an economic force. In the book The New Harvest, author Calestous Juma of Harvard University, USA, enumerates these opportunities: advances in science and technology; the creation of regional markets; and the emergence of a new crop of entrepreneurial leaders dedicated to the continent's economic improvement.
Juma presents case studies from Africa and other developing countries to arrive at policies and institutional changes that can promote agricultural innovation across the continent. Recommendations are forwarded on how African countries can collaborate on a regional basis to "develop local knowledge and resources, harness technological innovation, encourage entrepreneurship, increase agricultural output, create markets, and improve infrastructure."
