Livestock Competitiveness in Europe

November 19, 2010

Erratic prices of cereals put a pressure on the grains and livestock industry in Europe. In a report published in the website of Cooperativas Agro-alimentarius, Ramon Armengol Josep Erra, the person responsible for the Livestock and Feed of the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Catalonia (FCAC), Spain, discussed the measures to "improve the competitiveness of livestock and minimize the weaknesses of the sector".

Included in the set of measures is "to encourage uninhibited research and cultivation of new varieties of cereals, whether or not genetically modified to achieve improvements in productivity, nutritional quality and resistance to pests and diseases."

An immediate action is also necessary to integrate the many measures enumerated with focus on the maintenance of a safety net to ensure the availability of grain in times of crisis or unstable prices, and the harmonization of transparent agricultural policies across the member states.
