EFSA Updates Guidance on Environmental Impact of GM Plants
November 19, 2010 |
GMO Panel experts of European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have updated and developed its guidance for the environmental assessment of GM applications. This was submitted to the European Union for authorization. The document addresses the evaluation of potential long-term effects of GM plants and possible consequence on non-target organisms. It also implements the strict rules for the environmental risk assessment of GMOs as provided by Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release of GMOs in the environment. This revision was conducted upon the request of the European Commission in 2008.
EFSA held a number of scientific dialogues about the guidance document with representatives of the EU Member States, non-governmental organizations, and GM applicants. A draft was released earlier this year for public consultation.
