UN Report Says Africa Making Gains in Human Development Index

The Human Development Report entitled The Real Wealth of Nations: Pathways to Human Development, released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) ranks Ethiopia as Africa's top performer in improving people's lives over the past 40 years. Most African countries have made major gains but the situation has worsened in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The report examines progress in health, education and income measured by a human development index which ranks 135 countries. In addition to Ethiopia, Botswana, Benin and Burkina Faso are included in what the UNDP refers to as the world's "25 top movers".
