UK Farm Emission Research to Reduce Impact of Climate Change

November 5, 2010

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affair (Defra) and the Devolved Administrations in the United Kingdom have provided support to better understand how its agriculture contributes to climate change, said Farming Minister Jim Paice during Crop World 2010 in London. Agriculture contributes about eight per cent of all UK greenhouse gas (GHG) emission.

Defra will manage the research which will involve 16 research organizations in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Research will focus on specific ways by which different farming methods contribute to emissions. Results will provide evidence that will lead to more effective steps to reduce emissions.

"Farmers are already taking action to reduce their impact on climate change and this £12.6 million investment in world class research and development will enable us to understand which measures are having the biggest impacts," Paice added.
