Nigeria Minister of S&T Promotes Biotechnology

July 2, 2010

Nigeria's Minister of Science and Technology Muhammed Ka'oje Abubakar expressed his support to the application of biotechnology in agriculture to improve the food production of the country. He declared this in his speech at the June edition of the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa (OFAB) conducted at the National Press Center in Abuja.

"Biotechnology enhances breeder's ability to make improvement in crops and livestock. It likewise enables improvements that are not possible with traditional crossing with related species alone," he said. He stressed that the ministry he handles is committed to eradicate hunger through agricultural biotechnology. He also stated that there is low level of awareness and knowledge about biotechnology in Nigeria and therefore the media should inform the public about the benefits of biotechnology.
