U.S. Launches ‘Feed the Future' Initiative

May 28, 2010

The Feed the Future initiative was launched by the U.S. government to reaffirm its commitment to addressing global hunger and food security during a symposium hosted by the Chicago Council for Global Affairs. Dr. Rajiv Shah, the head of the United States Agency for International Development, presented the government's plan for food security and officially released the Feed the Future Guide, the implementation strategy for President Barack Obama Administration's global hunger and food security initiative.

Feed the Future will align resources with country-owned plans and foster sustained, multi-stakeholder partnerships to reduce hunger and poverty. The initiative will invest in agricultural productivity, research, and improved markets to increase global food supplies and reduce prices. President Obama pledged at least $3.5 billion for agricultural development and food security over three years during the 2009 G-8 Summit in L'Aquila, Italy. Commitments from other donors enabled more than $18.5 billion for a common food security program that led to Feed the Future.
