Cargill Grant Program Helps Fight Global Malnutrition and Hunger
May 28, 2010 |
Cargill continues to implement its Nourishing People grant program to combat world food hunger, which was launched last October 16, 2009 during the celebration of the World Food Day. Since the program started, they have already donated $3.3 million in cash and in kind to hunger relief organizations. According to Mary Thompson, president of Cargill Kitchen Solutions, Nourishing People is their commitment "to nourishing people around the world and using the company's leadership in food and agriculture to tackle the complex challenges of nutrition and hunger."
Feeding America, the leading hunger relief organization in the United States, received more than $1.1million from Cargill. The donation includes 495,000 pounds of egg products from Cargill Kitchen Solutions. On the other hand, CARE, a leading global humanitarian organization, also received donations and volunteer support for their programs in Honduras.
The United Nations estimates that 1.2 billion people or one-sixth of the world population is malnourished. Thus, global efforts such as the Cargill's Feeding People program are very essential in diminishing malnutrition across the globe.
