Biotech Industry Network Launched

April 8, 2010

An International Industrial Biotechnology Network (IIBN) was launched at a Symposium hosted by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna, Austria on 29 March 2010. It will assist its members in accessing and developing biotechnologies for sustainable industrial development.

"We need to create strong linkages between agriculture and industry and the importance of applying science and technology to agricultural production processes," said Kandeh K. Yumkella, UNIDO Director-General, during his opening statement. IIBN also aims to encourage South-South and North-South partnerships between public research institutions, industry and regulatory agencies through sharing of expertise and technology to generate economic value from biodiversity.

For more information on the Network and how to join, go to http://indbiotech.net/ or contact Marc Van Montagu of the Institute of Plant Breeding for Developing Countries at ivan.ingelbrecht@ugent.be.
