CFIA Seeks Comment on GM Soybean and Corn Applications
January 29, 2010 |
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Health Canada have received submissions from Dow AgroSciences Canada and Monsanto Canada seeking approvals for environmental release, livestock feed and food use of their transgenic corn and soybean, respectively. Dow AgroSciences Canada is seeking approval for DAS-40278-9 corn, which has been genetically modified (GM) for herbicide resistance. Monsanto's GM soybean line, MON 87705, on the other hand, has been modified for enhanced stability and nutrition, having increased levels of oleic acid and reduced levels of saturated fats, as well as herbicide tolerance. Mon 87705 expresses the cp4 epsps, FATB and FAD genes.
The Agency now seeks comment on the submissions. CFIA says that the applications received are in accordance with its guidelines for assessment of plants with novel traits (PNTs) for unconfined release, its guidelines for assessment of novel feeds from plant sources, and Health Canada's guidelines for assessment of novel foods.
