GM Crops to Play Key Role on Vietnam Farms
October 2, 2009 |
In a meeting of experts to discuss GMO issues in Vietnam agriculture, Nguyen Xuan Cuong, deputy minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), emphasized the importance of developing GMOs and applying this technology in agricultural production. To make this possible, Vietnam needs to set up and implement effective biotechnology regulation and safety management mechanisms for biotech crops and foods. To this end, a decree on biotechnology safety management for GMOs was drafted by the ministry which will be submitted to the government this month.
The draft will require all GMOs being considered for food or other products to undergo food safety assessment under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Health. Food safety approvals will be submitted to the MoNRE which would then confirm and grant a certificate that declares the product to be safe for human consumption.
