EFSA's Opinion on Mon89034 x NK603 Importation
October 2, 2009 |
The Scientific Opinion on the placing on the market of insect resistant and or herbicide tolerant genetically modified maize Mon89034 x NK603 for food and feed uses, import and processing application by Monsanto was recently released by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The EFSA GMO Panel assessed the application following the appropriate principles described in the Guidance documents on the Scientific Panel on GMOs for the risk assessment of GM plants and derived food and feed, and the Guidance Document for the risk assessment of GM plants containing stacked transformation events.
The summary documents says that the EFSA GMO Panel considers that the information available for maize MON89034 x NK603 addresses the scientific comments raised by Member States and that maize MON89034 x NK603 is as safe as its non-GM counterpart with respect to potential effects on human and animal health and the environment. The EFSA GMO Panel thus concludes that maize MON89034 x NK603 is unlikely to have any adverse effect on human and animal health or on the environment in the context of its intended uses.
