Candidate Sites for Crop Biofortification in Latin America

May 22, 2009

Identification of candidate sites for biofortification interventions for nine countries in Latin America and the Caribbean can now help determine where biofortified crop varieties should be grown. Nutrient deficiency risk data combined with crop production and socioeconomic data were used to assess the suitability of establishing an intervention.

In an article published in the International Journal of Health Geographics, Emmanuel Zapata-Caldas and colleagues present maps of candidate sites using Colombia, Nicaragua, and Bolivia as examples. It elaborates on the method of evaluating populations at risk of nutrient deficiencies for sub-national administrative regions. This method is a more economic alternative to more costly, information-intensive approaches.
